Remembering: Mildred Hettie Yarbrough Dixon

Birth: July 9, 1915, Rotan, Fisher County, Texas

Death: Jan. 23, 2005, Ironton, Iron County, Missouri      

Mildred Hettie Dixon, 89 of Ironton, Mo., formerly of Malden and Gideon, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at the Baptist Home in Ironton.

Born July 9, 1915, in Rotan, Texas, daughter of the late Russell and Laura Kilmer Yarbrough, she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

On May 28, 1932, in Fulton, Ky., she married Robert Dixon, who preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1991. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Robert and James Dixon; one brother, Clyde Yarbrough; three sisters, Louise Moody, Pauline Copeland and Laura Ette Yarbrough.

Survivors include one son, Phillip Dixon and wife, Evelyn, of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Roy Yarbrough, of Malden; one sister, Barbara Bullard, of Golf Shores, Ala.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gene Lancaster officiating.

Burial will follow at the Little Prairie Cemetery in Caruthersville, Mo.

Gracie Pauline Yarbrough Copeland article in Democrat Argus

Birth: Oct. 11, 1917

Death: Oct. 9, 1937, Huffman, Mississippi County, Arkansas

Mrs. Johnnie Copeland, nee Pauline Yarbrough, last spring's graduate and a bride of one week, succumbed to a congestive chill about 8:30 o'clock Saturday morning, October 9, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louie Walker of Huffman, Ark., cousins of the couple, with whom they were spending the week end. She had been ailing since the Tuesday preceding, but believed it only a malarial attack, hence did not confine herself to bed, and therefore her death was a great shock to her family.

The young couple were married Saturday, October 2, in this city by Rev. D.K. Foster, and it was touching that one week later he should be called to conduct a funeral service for her. On October 11th, 1937, she would have been twenty years old.

The deceased, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Yarbrough, had lived at Cottonwood for the greater part of her life. She was graduated from the Caruthersville high school last spring and was a ranking student and highly esteemed by the student body and faculty. She had an unusually amiable disposition that won for her many friends, and was active in the Baptist Church at Cottonwood, where she was one of the Sunday School teachers and acted as pianist for the church.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Baptist church in Cottonwood, which was largely attended by the friends of the two families, including a number from this city.

Mr. Copeland has farm lands at Gideon and is an assistant to his brother Fred Copeland, who maintains a real estate office in this city and New Madrid.

She is survived by her husband, her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Dickson of Finley, Tenn., and Miss Louise Yarbrough of Cottonwood, also two brothers, Robert and Clyde Yarbrough, also of Cottonwood. The latter three now attend the Caruthersville high school.

Last week this paper published an item concerning the death of an infant child of Mrs. Dickson, a double portion of sorrow having been meted out to this family recently.

I found this record on James Robert "Bob" Killmer and his wife, Rosetta Parker Killmer, who appears to be my grandmother's father and mother.

Here's the information for James Robert:

Bob Killmer, was the husband of Rosetta T. "Bug" Parker Killmer. The Killmers name frequently was spelled with only one L. They had 13 children, Lillie Mae Kilmer/Killmer, Nan(Nancy) Kilmer, Mollie Kilmer/, Annie Bert Kilmer/Killmer, Fannie Kilmer/Killmer, Hattie Kilmer, Willie Kilmer/Killmer, Ruth Killmer, Laura Cornelia Kilmer/Killmer, Robert Roy Kilmer/Killmer (my Grandfather), Coy Kilmer/Killmer, born 1899 died 1910 (a female), Grace Kilmer/Killmer, born 1903, and Emma Kilmer. He served in the Confederate Army in State Troops Company and in the GoHagan Regiment, and an Infantry Division, as noted by the Arkansas Confederate Pension information. About Rosetta Parker, I found this: Birth:  Feb. 14, 1858 Death:  Mar. 22, 1943 According the Myrtie Clifton, it was well known that Rosetta was a strong willed women who did not like to work. It was rumored that her husband James had gold and she did not have to work. Myrtie said Rosetta would wash dishes and iron overalls and that was about it. If anyone gave her a hard time about it, she would just pack up and go visit relatives for a while. From E. Fulmer at her request: "Rosetta was a sister to Cornelia Parker Pennington. They were married on the same day, in their fathers house on Aug 6, 1874. I ran onto an old wedding announcement in a newspaper a few years back while snooping for family tree info". Robert Lloyd Yarbrough - Death enters the "Yarbro" home

At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 1928, death entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Yarbro and took from them a precious little one, Robert Lloyd, aged 2 years, 6 months and 6 days. Death came to relieve the little sufferer after a 4-days illness of broncial pneumonia. Robert was a child of such sweet disposition and winsome ways that he was an especially beloved member of the family and of all who knew him. Funeral services were conducted at the home by the Rev. D.K. Foster, of Caruthersville, after which the little body was laid to rest in Little Prairie cemetery to await the resurrection morning. The community extends sincerest sympathy to the bereaved family and friends.

Round its little grave we linger,
Till the setting sun is low
Feeling all our hopes have perished
With the flower we cherished so.

Roy Albert, an infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Yarbro, aged 5 months, was very sick at the time of the funeral of Robert Lloyd, but we are glad to report is much better at this writing.

Here's a shot of my parents, Roy and June Yarbrough, during a visit to Barbara Yarbrough Bullard (his baby sister's) house in Gulf Shores, Alabama. I just love his photo! Dad was in full vacation mode with his hat, shorts and tennis shoes ... which I rarely ever saw him wear!

Yarbrough family reunion in Memphis

Church records show Mrs. R.A. (Laura) Yarbrough was made church clerk and Sunday School superintendent at Cottonwood Baptist Church, Cottonwood Point, Mo.

Mickey Moody and Cottonwood Baptist Church

It's a blessing to see what my cousin, Mickey Moody, along with members and volunteers are doing with Cottonwood Baptist Church near Caurthersville, Mo. They are in the process of completing a new building at the site of the original building, where my grandparents, Russell and Laura Yarbrough, were members in the 1930s. My grandmother, Laura, served as WMU director and church clerk. Cottonwood is a stone's throw from the Mississippi River and a ferry crossing. My grandparents would have been very proud to know that Mickey is now the pastor of the church!
