Michael Akers - December 17, 1976 ~ May 29, 2026


Michael Morgan Akers was born in Austin, Texas, on December 17,1976. He was the son of Frankie Akers and Iris Moody.

Michael departed this life at his home in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, on May 29, 2026. He was 49 years, 5 months, and 12 days old.

Mike was just a baby when his family moved back to Missouri so that he could grow up around family.

He attended schools at R-3, at Caruthersville and then graduated from high school in West Plains, Missouri. He received his BS in graphic arts from Southwest Missouri Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri.

Michael proudly served his country as a United States Marine. He served two tours of duty in Iraq.

After receiving his honorable discharge, he made his home in California.

While living in California, he worked at a DAV group home and later as an IRS assistant analyst while also obtaining his master's degree.

Michael was an avid New York Yankees fan, just as his father was.  He also was an accomplished artist.

He had two dogs that he loved – Patty and Rocky.

Mike moved back to Missouri to be closer to his mother.

He is survived by his mother: Iris Moody of Caruthersville, MO; his child: Caleb Akers of CA; two sisters: Morgan Goss and her husband, Jake, of Columbia, MO, and Angie Akers of West Plains, MO; his step-mother: Phyllis Crider of West Plains, MO; two uncles: Doug Moody and his wife, Cammy, of Springfield, MO, and Steve Moody and his wife, Suzie, of Warrensburg, MO; an aunt: Debbie Moody of Caruthersville, MO; his cousins: Thad (Crystal), Kara (David), Laura, Callie and Calen (Kylee) and their families; and other family members and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frankie, his grandparents, George and Louise Moody, and Vernon Akers and Beulah Akers Franklin, and an uncle, Mickey Moody.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. in the H.S. Smith Funeral Chapel. Military honors to follow service.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m.
